Mario and Luigi Bento

This is the third time I made Super Mario and Luigi, click HERE for my previous bentos. I've fond memories of Super Mario, as it was the only video game I played when I was a kid. My uncle used to sell computers and games in his store, and every school holiday, he would bring me to his store and let me play with Super Mario.

Mario bento for my boys, they used to play Super Mario pretty often previously, but they are recently obsessed over some other games. IT would always use Mario in the game, while LT used Luigi. I read somewhere that if you are the younger brother, you will be the one using Luigi, very true, lol.

The side dishes for this bento were meatballs, broccoli, omelette (which I cut into stars and question mark box), strawberries and kiwis.

IMG_1859
Mario was made from rice (coloured using tomato sauce and deco furi), ham, nori and egg. This ham I got looks almost white. The blue portion was ham, which I coloured blue by rubbing on some blue colouring. I must be crazy, because I did not want to substitute the blue with another colour and yet I do not want my boys to eat coloured ham, so I ended up asking them not to eat the blue ham, felt rather guilty thereafter for wasting food. -_-

Luigi and Yoshi bento were made on another day, ran out of time to make them on the same day as Super Mario. I seriously have no idea how I can make so many bentos in a day previously. -_- The side dishes that day were potato with minced pork and chicken veggie roll. Super mushroom is made from quail eggs, ham and nori.

IMG_1958
Luigi was made using similar ingredients as Mario. Yoshi was rice wrapped in blanched veggie, with details done using carrot, ham and nori.

IMG_1960
Same dilemma with the blue ham here, my boys remembered and asked whether they should eat the blue ham, so I told them not to again. -_- I should try soaking the ham in butterfly pea water next time and see whether it can be coloured blue this way.

Mario and Luigi Mustache Bento

3rd of February, which is today, is International fake mustache day. I'm doing a bento hop with my fellow Bento Bloggers, so remember to click the button at the end of the post, to visit everyone's mustache creations

IMG_3868
Hee, the only characters that came to my mind when I think of mustache is Mario and Luigi. It's also one of my boys' favourite characters. Mario and Luigi are made from ham, bread, nori and crabstick.

IMG_3872
The contents of the lunch are rice, broccoli, pork, grapes and strawberries.

IMG_3878
I packed myself a mustache bento too, with these cute mustache picks from BentoUSA. My lunch consists of rice, pork, shredded carrots and cucumbers, capsicum and tomatoes.

Now, please click on the picture to go on to the We Aren't Scared of Sugar, and check out what awesome creation Kandice has for you. :)

Mario, Luigi and Yoshi Bento

I'm back again, as the boys are back to School again. We had a good Chinese New Year break, stuffing ourselves with all the goodies. Now, I need to make some plans to diet again. lol. :P

For the bentos today, I pre-moulded the rice and pre-cut out the cheese while the boys were taking a nap yesterday afternoon. I managed to take step-by-step photos and I hope you will find them useful. :)

IMG_1340
Mario, Luigi and Yoshi. I'll start off with how to do Yoshi. :)

IMG_1300
First, you find a photo of Yoshi, size it and then print it out. The next step is to trace out your picture on parchment paper. I do not own a printer, so I usually sketch out my picture instead.

IMG_1301
Cut out the picture and decide how many layers you want.

IMG_1302
I am using cheese, as LT hates egg sheets. :( Cut out the outline with a toothpick.

IMG_1303
I will be doing 3 layers, these 2 cut-outs will be the second layer. :) You can wrap your cut cheese in cling wrap and store them in the fridge.

IMG_1305
And this is my last layer, Yoshi's eyes and nose.

IMG_1309
And these are what I use to color my cheese, I prefer to use the spray mist coz you just have to spray it on and wait for a while for the color to settle. :)

IMG_1326
And this is the completed Yoshi. I colored the cheese and added on the nori this morning. This is IT's box for recess, he had peanut butter sammies, blueberries and meat patty.

IMG_1284
Now, we go on to making Mario and Luigi. I usually use this deco furi to color my rice. You can find it at Daiso. It comes with a mild salmon flavour, the boys love it.

IMG_1286
You just have to pour in when your rice is still warm and mix it up.

IMG_1287
Mario checking out on the color. lol. :)

IMG_1288
Mould Mario face using cling wrap.

IMG_1290
Luigi face is longer.

IMG_1291
Mould out the ears and nose.

IMG_1292
Mould out the hat with white rice. Then pour some deco furi only on the surface, do not mix it in. This will give you a more vibrant color.

IMG_1296
Assemble the hat. Dun worry too much about the uneven colors on the hat, it will not be obvious after you assemble the bento.

IMG_1298
Assemble on the ears. I changed to a smaller lunchbox after this.

IMG_1299
Do the same for Luigi, I've used colour mist for the green here. :)Wrap them with cling wrap if you are going to keep them for the next day.

IMG_1322
This is the completed Mario, I added on the nori and cheese this morning. I cut out the nori free-hand and used a puncher for the eyes. The nose is attached on with uncooked angel hair pasta. It will soften by lunch time and will be safe to be eaten. This box is for IT, he had onigiri, bacon rolls, meat patties, strawberries and carrots.

IMG_1325
Luigi is for LT, he had the same food as above.

IMG_1194
This is seafood hor fun, our dinner from last Friday. I was feeling lazy, so I just dished out a one dish meal. lol.

IMG_1342
This was my lunch today, rice, crabmeat omelette and carrot/asparagus pork rolls.

Such a long post today! If you are still reading until here, I would like to say a big thank you to you. :) I hope you can understand the steps, as I'm really bad with words. :)

Mario and Luigi Bento

My boy had asked for Mario and Luigi quite sometime ago. But I've been putting it off because it will take me longer than usual to do. I am very glad I finally did them today, they were very happy to see Mario and Luigi in their bentos. :) This was done for their dinner, but it's not their complete dinner, as there was still a chicken leg grilling in the oven, which I've no space to fit in. :P

IMG_8358
IT's bento, he likes Mario. :) In his box are multi-grained rice, grated cheese meat patties, broccoli and sausages. I gave him slices of grilled chicken leg and extra servings of broccoli and enoki in another bowl.

IMG_8356
LT's bento, he likes Luigi. :) He's having the same food as IT in his box. He only gets slices of grilled chicken in another bowl. He does not eat much vegetables and he hates enoki. :P

IMG_8355
Mario and Luigi bentos. Can you spot what's missing? I forgot about their eyebrows! lol. I only realised after uploading the pictures. Looks like I will have to attempt them again next year!
